Pune

Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra, is well known for its prominent educational institutions, IT hubs, historical monuments and many other attractions. Once the centre of power of the Maratha Emperor Shivaji, it subsequently served as the monsoon capital of the erstwhile British Empire. Several magnificent forts, palaces, temples, museums, parks and gardens in Pune attract a large number of tourists from India and abroad. The city is famous for varieties of cultural activities including music, dance, arts, literature and spirituality. The 10-day long Pune Festival is the biggest cultural festival in Pune.  The city can be accessed through Pune International Airport, Pune Junction railway station and three major bus stations. Sightseeing

 

Shanivar Vada: This palace built by Bajirao Peshwa in the 18th century is a historical landmark of Pune. It is an architectural marvel that depicts the wonderful Peshwa rule in Pune.

 

Osho Ashram: This world-famous spiritual centre that spreads across 40 acres in the Korgaon Park is an ideal location for people interested in meditation and other spiritual activities.

 

Aga Khan Palace: This palace built by Muhammed Sha Aga Khan in 1892 has great historical significance. It has witnessed the imprisonment of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu.

 

Sinhagad Fort: It is a majestic fort located on an isolated cliff of Sahyadris. Tourists have to trek through a 700 m hill to reach there.

 

Dagaduseth Halwai Ganpati Temple: This famous temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha was built by Dagaduseth Halwai, a pious man. The best time to visit this temple is during Ganesh Festival.

 

Pataleshwar Cave Temple: This rock-cut temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built in 8th century during Rashtrakuta rule and is famous for its architecture and sculptures

 

Parvati Hill: The huge Parvati Hill which offers scenic views of the surroundings is located at a height of 2100 meters above sea level and houses five temples namely, Devdeveshwar Temple, Vishnu Temple, Ram Temple, Vitthal temple and Karthikey Temple.

 

Shinde Chhatri: This beautiful structure in Anglo-Rajasthan style of architecture was built in memory of Mahadji Shinde.

 

 

 

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park: In this large park of 42 acres, tourists can see tigers, elephants, deers, etc., and can also enjoy a cool boat ride.

 

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, Vetal Hill, Saras Baugh, Mulshi Dam, Lohagarh Fort, etc., are some other prominent places to visit in Pune.

Pune, which has established several shopping malls, markets and shops, is regarded as a shopper’s paradise. Several restaurants in Pune serve a wide range of cuisine including South Indian, North Indian, Chinese, Italian and continental. Yana Sizzlers and Wok is a great place for sizzlers and Bedekar Misal is famous for Misal items. Restaurants Vaishali, Wadeshwar, Roopali, etc., offer delicious South Indian dishes. Visit Joshi Vadewala for vada pav, and Nisarg or Rahul for best sea food. Several restaurants including Sharvaree, Sukanta and Durvankur serve traditional Maharashtrian Thali at reasonable rates.
